What Is Spiritual Discernment?
Spiritual discernment is the God-given ability to recognize, perceive, understand, and judge things from a spiritual perspective.
It is your ability to know the difference between good and evil, truth and error.
How to Grow in Spiritual Discernment
1. Know The Voice of God
John 10:4–5
“After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice.
They won’t follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don’t know his voice.”
Psalm 25:14
There’s a private place reserved for the devoted lovers of God,
where they sit near him and receive the revelation-secrets of his promises.
2. Feed Yourself with The Word of God.
Psalm 119:105
“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”
The Word is the primary measuring rod.
Let the word of God guide you in your choices and decisions.
You cannot detect an error if you do not deeply know the truth.
Study context, compare Scripture with Scripture, and evaluate everything through the Word.
3. Get the Revelation of the Holy Spirit
1 Corinthians 2:12–14
And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.
When we tell you these things, we do not use words that come from human wisdom. Instead, we speak words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit’s words to explain spiritual truths.
But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit.
It all sounds foolish to them, and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.”
The natural mind cannot fully grasp spiritual realities.
Ask the Spirit daily for insight and clarity.
4. Develop Obedience Through Practice
Hebrews 5:14
“But solid food is for the mature, whose spiritual senses perceive heavenly matters. And they have been adequately trained by what they experienced to emerge with an understanding of the difference between what is truly excellent and what is evil and harmful.
Spiritual perception increases as obedience increases.
Respond quickly when God convicts or directs you.
5. Pray for Wisdom and Insight
James 1:5
“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.”
Ephesians 1:17–18
“I pray that the Father of glory, the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, would impart to you the riches of the Spirit of wisdom and the Spirit of revelation to know him through your deepening intimacy with him.
18I pray that the light of God will illuminate the eyes of your imagination, flooding you with light, until you experience the full revelation of the hope of his calling —that is, the wealth of God’s glorious inheritances that he finds in us, his holy ones!
Philippians 1:9–10
Paul prayed for believers to grow in knowledge and depth of insight.
Pray specifically for clarity in decisions, relationships, and teachings you encounter.
6. Evaluate Fruit, Not Just Appearance
Matthew 7:15–16
“Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. 16You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act.”
Galatians 5:22–23
“But the fruit produced by the Holy Spirit within you is divine love in all its varied expressions:
joy that overflows,
peace that subdues,
patience that endures,
kindness in action,
a life full of virtue,
faith that prevails,
gentleness of heart, and
strength of spirit.
Never set the law above these qualities, for they are meant to be limitless.
7. Guard Your Mind and Influences
Proverbs 4:23
Guard your heart above all else,
for it determines the course of your life.
Pay attention to the welfare of your innermost being,
For from there flows the wellspring of life
Discernment weakens when the mind is polluted.
8. Seek Mature Counsel
Proverbs 11:14
Where there is no counsel, the people fall.
But in the multitude of counselors there is safety.
God often confirms discernment through wise believers.
9. Be Willing to Wait
Ecclesiastes 3:1
To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven
Time often reveals what emotion conceals.
10. Maintain Humility
James 4:6
And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say,
“God opposes the proud
but gives grace to the humble.”
God gives greater grace to the humble.
Signs You Are Growing in Discernment
- Increased sensitivity to sin
- Greater caution before decisions
- Ability to distinguish emotional impulse from spiritual conviction
- Balanced judgment with compassion
- Alignment between Scripture and inner conviction
Common Hindrances to Discernment
- Pride and self-reliance
- Habitual sin
- Overexposure to misleading teaching
- Neglect of prayer
