Proverbs 6:10-11
“A little extra sleep, a little more slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest
11then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit;
Scarcity will attack you like an armed robber”.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, we exalt you and give you all the glory and honor. All things in heaven and earth belong to you. We receive the grace to overcome poverty in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen
What is Poverty?
Poverty is more than the lack of money; it is the lack of material, spiritual, relational, or moral resources needed for total well-being.
It is both the reality of economic hardship and the deeper condition of spiritual poverty.
Types Of Poverty?
1. Material Poverty
Material poverty is the lack of basic needs—food, shelter, clothing, and resources to maintain a minimum standard of living
1John 3:17
“If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person
Proverbs 19:17
“He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord…”
2. Spiritual Poverty
Spiritual poverty is separation from God and a lack of spiritual life.
Matthew 5:3
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
To be “poor in spirit” means recognizing one’s need for God.
Revelation 3:17
“You say, ‘I am rich…’ and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor…”
A person can be materially wealthy yet spiritually poor.
3. Poverty of knowledge
Poverty can also result from a lack of knowledge or discipline
Hosea 4:6
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”
Ignorance and poor choices can lead to hardship.
Proverbs 24:3 TPT
Wise people are builders —
They build families, businesses, and communities.
And through intelligence and insight,
their enterprises are established and endure.
What are The Causes of Poverty in the Bible?
The Bible identifies several contributing factors:
1. Laziness
Proverbs 6:10-11
“A little extra sleep, a little more slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest—
11then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit;
Scarcity will attack you like an armed robber”.
Proverbs 10:4
“He who has a slack hand becomes poor, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.”
2. Lack of Discipline
Proverbs 21:17
“He who loves pleasure will be a poor man…”
3. Oppression and Injustice
James 5:4
Listen! Can’t you hear the cries of the laborers over the wages you fraudulently held back from those who worked for you? The cries for justice of those you’ve cheated have reached the ears of the Lord of armies!
Injustice can create poverty.
4. Testing and Seasons of Trial
Sometimes poverty is not punishment but a season of refinement.
Philippians 4:12
“I know how to be abased… and I know how to abound.”
How To Successfully Overcome Poverty?
1. Seek God First
Matthew 6:33
“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
True prosperity begins with righting your relationship with God.
2. Embrace Diligence and Hard Work
Proverbs 10:4
Lazy hands make for poverty,
But diligent hands bring wealth.
Proverbs 13:4
“The soul of a diligent man shall be made rich
1Corinthians4:12
“We work wearily with our own hands to earn our living”.
3. Practice Wisdom and Stewardship
Proverbs 6:6–8
Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones.
Learn from their ways and become wise!
7Though they have no prince
or a governor or ruler to make them work,
8they labor hard all summer,
gathering food for the winter.
4. Overcoming poverty often requires:
- Planning
- Saving
- Avoiding waste
- Wise decision-making
5. Give Generously
Giving breaks cycles of scarcity and activates God’s provision.
Proverbs 11:25
“The generous soul will be made rich.”
2 Corinthians 9:6–8
“He who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully…”
Generosity invites divine supply.
6. Trust God as your Provider
Psalm 37:25
“I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his descendants begging bread.”
Philippians 4:19
“My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory.”
Faith sustains hope in the face of lack.
7. Develop Contentment
1 Timothy 6:6–8
“Godliness with contentment is great gain.”
Contentment protects the heart from despair and greed.
8. The Ultimate Solution to Poverty
Jesus addresses both spiritual and material needs.
2 Corinthians 8:9
“Though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.”
Through Christ:
- Spiritual poverty becomes salvation
- Emotional poverty becomes peace
- Eternal poverty becomes an inheritance
