10 Habits to Surrender to the Spirit’s Power for Godly Character
What Are Habits?
Habits are repeated patterns of behavior—thoughts,
words, or actions—that become part of your daily lifestyle.
Over time, habits shape your character, influence
your decisions, and ultimately determine the direction
of your life.
10 Habits to Surrender to the Spirit’s Power
1. Self-Life
Galatians 5:19-21 TPT
The behavior of the self-life is obvious: Sexual immorality,
lustful thoughts, pornography, chasing after things
instead of God, manipulating others, hatred of those who
get in your way, senseless arguments, resentment when others
are favored, temper tantrums, angry quarrels, and only thinking of
yourself, being in love with your own opinions, being envious
of the blessings of others, murder, uncontrolled addictions,
wild parties, and all other similar behavior.
Haven’t I already warned you that those who use their “freedom”
For these things will not inherit the kingdom of God!
The Spirit produces character where the flesh once controlled.
Walk in the Spirit, and you will not fulfill the self-life
2. Habitual Sin and Fleshly Patterns
Romans 8:13
“Put to death the deeds of the body by the Spirit.”
Romans 6:14
“Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the
requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.”
The Spirit empowers you to break sinful habits.
Confess, repent, and rely on the Spirit for victory over recurring sins.
3. Negative Thought Patterns
Mark 7:21-23
“For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts,
sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness,
deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness.
All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.”
“Bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”
Ungodly thoughts shape ungodly behavior
Replace negative thoughts with the word of God.
4. Uncontrolled Speech
Ephesians 4:29
Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful,
so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.
James 3:2
“Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our
tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.”
Speech reveals character.
Disciplines your tongue to produce life-giving words.
5. Anger, Bitterness, and Unforgiveness
Ephesians 4:31–32
“Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as
all types of evil behavior.
32Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as
God through Christ has forgiven you.”
Colossians 3:13
“Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who
offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.”
Unforgiveness hardens your heart and quenches the Spirit.
Choose forgiveness as an act of obedience, trusting the Spirit to heal.
6. Pride and Self-Exaltation
James 4:6
1 Peter 5:6
“So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and
At the right time, he will lift you in honor.”
Pride blocks grace.
7. Lack of Self-Control
Galatians 5:22–23
“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness, and self-control.
There is no law against these things!
Proverbs 25:28
Let the Spirit govern your desires, reactions, and habits.
8. Worry, Anxiety, and Fear
Philippians 4:6–7
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.
Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.
7Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything
we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as
you live in Christ Jesus.”
2 Timothy 1:7
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power,
love, and self-discipline.”
Fear competes with faith.
Turn your worries into prayers and trust the Spirit’s peace.
9. Love of the World
1 John 2:15-16
“Do not love this world nor the things it offers you,
For when you love the world, you do not have the love of
the Father in you. 16For the world offers only a craving for
physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride
in our achievements and possessions.
These are not from the Father, but are from this world.”
Choose obedience even when it is uncomfortable
10. Resistance to the Spirit’s Conviction
Ephesians 4:30
“And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live.
Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you
will be saved on the day of redemption.”
Hebrews 3:15
Ignoring conviction stalls spiritual growth.
Respond quickly to the Spirit’s promptings.
