James 1:12 (TPT)
“If your faith remains strong even while surrounded by life’s difficulties, you will continue to experience the untold blessings of God! True happiness comes as you pass the test with faith and receive the victorious crown of life promised to every lover of God!”
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, the entrance of your word gives light.
Thank you for the opportunity to learn at your feet in Jesus Name. Amen
Ephesians 6:10
“Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.”
What Are Life’s Difficulties?
Life’s difficulties refer to the various trials, tests, and pressures that challenge your faith.
These difficulties are not limited to one category—they include external suffering and internal struggles.
1. Persecution for Faith
Matthew 5:10–12
2 Timothy 3:12
“Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.”
Persecution includes:
- Mockery
- Rejection
- Loss of position
- Physical suffering
These pressures test loyalty to God.
2. Financial Hardship and Poverty
The early church included many poor believers.
James 1:9–10
“The poor believer still has reasons to boast, for he has been placed on high.
10But those who are rich should boast in how God has brought them low
and humbled them, for all their earthly glory will one day fade away
like a wildflower in the meadow.”
Hebrews 10:34
Financial trials test:
- Trust in God as your provider
- Contentment
- Dependence on eternal riches
3. Temptations and Inner Struggles
James 1:13–14
“When you are tempted, don’t ever say, ‘God is tempting me,’ for
God is incapable of being tempted by evil, and he is never the source of temptation.
14 Instead, it is each person’s own desires and thoughts that drag them into evil
and lure them away into darkness. “
Life difficulties include:
- Fleshly desires
- Emotional battles
- Moral temptations
1 Corinthians 10:13
“The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience.
And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand.
When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.”
The internal war can be as intense as external persecution.
4. Suffering and Affliction
1 Peter 1:6–7
“So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure
many trials for a little while. 7These trials will show that your faith is genuine.
It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold, though your faith is far more
precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials,
it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when
Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.”
Romans 8:18
“Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later.”
These include:
- Sickness
- Loss of loved ones
- Disappointment
- Delay of promises
Such afflictions test endurance.
5. Social Injustice and Oppression
James 5:1–6
“Look here, you rich people: Weep and groan with anguish because of
all the terrible troubles ahead of you. 2Your wealth is rotting away, and your
Fine clothes are moth-eaten rags. 3Your gold and silver are corroded.
The very wealth you were counting on will eat away your flesh like fire.
This corroded treasure you have hoarded will testify against you on the day of judgment.
4For listen! Hear the cries of the field workers whom you have cheated of their pay.
The cries of those who harvest your fields have reached the ears of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
James strongly addresses oppression by the wealthy.
Believers experienced:
- Exploitation
- Legal injustice
- Social discrimination
Remaining faithful in unjust systems requires your deep trust in God.
6. Trials of Faith and Doubt
James 1:5–8
“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you.
He will not rebuke you for asking. 6But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone.
Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea
that is blown and tossed by the wind. 7Such people should not expect to
receive anything from the Lord.
8Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are
unstable in everything they do.”
Hebrews 11:6
“And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come
to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.”
Seasons of:
- Spiritual dryness
- Confusion
Your Faith itself shall be tested.
These are real difficulties that challenge your belief.
7. Leadership and Responsibility Pressures
James 3:1
“My dear brothers and sisters, don’t be so eager to become a teacher in the church,
since you know that we who teach are held to a higher standard of judgment.”
Responsibility itself will be a trial:
- Accountability
- Criticism
- Spiritual warfare
They are anything that tests the authenticity of faith.
Why Does God Allow These Difficulties?
James 1:3–4
“For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.
4So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be
perfect and complete, needing nothing.”
2 Corinthians 4:16–17
“That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits
are being renewed every day.
17For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long.
Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!
Difficulties:
- Refine your faith
- Produce endurance
- Prepare you for eternal reward
HOW TO REMAIN STRONG
1. Difficulties Are Part of the Christian Journey
In John 16:33, Jesus said:
“In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
Similarly, James 1:2–3 teaches that trials produce perseverance.
Trials are not signs of God’s absence; they are often tools for spiritual maturity.
Jesus never promised a trouble-free life.
2. Anchor Your Strength in the Lord, Not in Yourself
Ephesians 6:10
“Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.”
Isaiah 40:31
Apostle Paul testified in 2 Corinthians 12:9:
“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”
Human strength fails under pressure, but divine strength does not.
When you feel weakest, God’s strength becomes most visible.
3. Guard Your Mind and Heart
Proverbs 4:23
Philippians 4:8
“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing.
Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right,
and pure, and lovely, and admirable.
Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”
Difficulties first attack the mind.
Strength is maintained by disciplined thinking.
If your thoughts collapse, your endurance weakens.
4. Stay Rooted in God’s Word
Psalm 119:92
“Unless Your law had been my delight, I would then have perished in my affliction.”
Matthew 4:4
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”
The Word sustains you when emotions fluctuate.
Jesus overcame temptation by quoting Scripture. So must we.
5. Develop a Lifestyle of Prayer
1 Thessalonians 5:17
“Pray without ceasing.”
Hebrews 4:16
“So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy,
And we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
Another translation of that verse says,
“So now we draw near freely and boldly to where grace is enthroned, to receive
mercy’s kiss and discover the grace we urgently need to strengthen us in our time of weakness.
Prayer is spiritual oxygen in adversity.
It exchanges your anxiety for God’s peace.
6. Remember God’s Faithfulness in the Past
David strengthened himself in the Lord (1 Samuel 30:6).
Rehearsing past victories builds present courage.
Lamentations 3:21–23
7. Maintain Joy as a Spiritual Weapon
Nehemiah 8:10
“The joy of the Lord is your strength.”
Joy is not denial of hardship; it is confidence in God despite hardship.
8. Keep an Eternal Perspective
Romans 8:18
“The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory…”
2 Corinthians 4:16–18
“So no wonder we don’t give up. For even though our outer person gradually
wears out, our inner being is renewed every single day. 17We view our slight,
short-lived troubles in the light of eternity. We see our difficulties as the
substance that produces for us an eternal, weighty glory far beyond all comparison,
18because we don’t focus our attention on what is seen but on what is unseen.
For what is seen is temporary, but the unseen realm is eternal.
Temporary struggles should not overshadow eternal glory.
